„Łódź poprzez wieki. Historia miasta" – premiera IV tomu monografii

The ceremonial premiere of the 4th volume of the monograph: "Łódź poprzez wieki. Historia miasta. Od 1945 roku" [Lodz Through the Ages. History of the City. History of Lodz after 1945] was held on Friday, 19 July 2024 at the Hall of Mirrors of the Izrael Poznański Palace (seat of the Museum of the City of Lodz). This was an extremely important event in the life of the city, reminding us of its rich history and constant development. The monograph has been created on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of granting city rights to Lodz.

The latest volume, which has been created by scientists from the University of Lodz, focuses on post-war history, including the times of the Polish People's Republic and the political transformation (initiated in 1989). The study takes into account not only political and economic changes, but also social, cultural and spatial issues.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the university and city authorities – Dr hab. Robert Zakrzewski, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz, the University of Lodz Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Quality of Education, Prof. Rafał Matera, Rector Elect and Adam Pustelnik, First Deputy Mayor of Lodz.

The presentation of the monograph attracted a great deal of interest, including from the residents of Lodz, who had the opportunity to listen to the authors' lectures and ask them questions. 

The discussion about the publication was attended by: 

  • Prof. Krzysztof Lesiakowski – the editor of the 4th volume, Head of the Department of Polish and World History after 1945 (Institute of History, University of Lodz). His scientific interests focus on the activities of the security apparatus in post-war Poland and the history of opposition and social resistance;
  • Prof. Wioletta Kazimierska-Jerzyk – an aesthetician and an art historian, who works at the Department of Ethics (the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Lodz). In her scientific research, she is interested in the world of contemporary values, i.e. whether and how they manifest themselves in aesthetics, art and urban space;
  • Prof. Piotr Szukalski – a demographer and a gerontologist, who is employed at the Department of the Sociology of Structures and Social Changes (Institute of Sociology of the University of Lodz). Prof. Piotr Szukalski specialises in issues at the intersection of demography, social gerontology and social policy;
  • Dr Ewa Kacprzyk – Doctor of Humanities, the author of a publication entitled "Warunki życia mieszkańców Łodzi 1945-1948" [Living conditions of the inhabitants of Lodz1945-1948].

The meeting will be led by Dr Grzegorz Mnich, Doctor of Humanities, who is a journalist. Dr Grzegorz Mnich is associated with the University of Lodz and deals with the Polish press in the post-war period, contemporary history and the world of media. 

The entire project was supervised by the Lodz University Press team.
