ACCOMMODATION
Before visiting the IRO office to submit your documents, we advise checking out your accommodation. Use Google Maps to find any address you need in Łódź.
UL DORMITORIES
If you have been assigned a place in a dormitory and received an email confirmation with the address, please note the following:
- Each UL dormitory has a list of students expected to stay there, so make sure to go to the dormitory specified in your email.
- While you can technically arrive at your dormitory at any time, it’s advisable to check in on weekdays before 3:30 PM to get a bedding set. If you arrive late, you will receive a blanket and wait for bedding until the next working day. Be prepared for this if you arrive in the evening or on a weekend.
BASIC RULES
Room Equipment: rooms are generally not equipped with fridges. However, students sometimes leave small fridges behind when they move out, so some rooms might have fridges, but they are not part of the official equipment.
Kitchen Use: every floor in the dorm has a common kitchen available for students. Please remember to leave it clean and in good condition after use.
Internet Access: free internet is available in each dormitory. To access it, get a request form from the reception desk, fill it out, and return it. Most dormitories have wired connections, so check if your laptop has an Ethernet port. If not, you’ll need to buy an Ethernet switch from a tech shop (e.g., Media Markt, RTV Euro AGD). Dorms 5, 7, 9, 10, and 14 also offer Wi-Fi.
Laundry: each dormitory has a laundry facility. Sign up at the reception desk on Friday for the following week. If you miss the sign-up, you’ll need to manage on your own.
Addressing Issues: if you have any issues or problems, first talk to the reception employee or the dorm manager. For further assistance, contact IRO.
Communication Tips: dormitory staff may not speak perfect English, but being friendly and polite helps. Use translation websites or phrasebooks for simple messages, and ask for help from fellow students in your dormitory’s Tenant’s Council (Rada Mieszkańców DS).
Original Documents Needed: the IRO staff will require your original admission documents because the initial admission process was based on scanned copies uploaded to the admission platform. The IRO staff will verify the documents and their Embassy legalizations to ensure everything is correct. Missing any required documents means you cannot be officially admitted to the University of Lodz. You will also need to present documents proving your right to stay in Poland (e.g., visa, permanent residence permit).
Document Preparation: ensure all documents are neatly organized, including your international passport (ID page and visa) and insurance policy, to help the IRO process your application more quickly. There may be a line of students waiting, so ask who is the last person in line.
Submission Process: the IRO will collect your documents (see checklist below) when they are verified and pass them to the appropriate UL Faculty for further registration. Do not take your documents to the faculty yourself unless instructed by the IRO. The transfer process usually takes a few days. Your original documents will remain at your Faculty’s Dean’s Office throughout your studies.

HEALTH INSURANCE
Attention non-EU/EEA students! If you already have health insurance from your home country, ensure it’s valid in Poland and check what’s covered. You’ll need to pay for medical consultations upfront, but you can get reimbursed later.
No valid insurance abroad? Don’t stress! After arriving in Poland, you have two choices:
Sign up at 35 Targowa Street. Bring your passport, a Polish student status confirmation (from your Dean’s Office), and proof of residence (get it from the Dorm reception and register at 110 Piotrkowska Street).
The monthly fee is 55.80 PLN. Sign the agreement at the NFZ office and pay monthly. With NFZ, you get free medical treatment after showing your insurance and Student ID.
Opt for private health insurance. It can cover health, liability, life, or property insurance. Private insurance might save you money and offer more flexibility. Research your options to find the best fit.
Stay insured and enjoy your time in Poland!
I NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR - WHAT TO DO NEXT?
There are two possibilities that apply to the majority of students:
- Find a health centre: go to any health centre with an "NFZ" sign.
- Use keywords like "Łódź, przychodnia, POZ, wizyta u lekarza, NFZ" when searching on Google.
- Fill in the declaration form (in Polish) on site.
- Make an appointment at the reception desk. You can also try calling them.
Free visits: with the EHIC, the visit is free, as well as most medical examinations ordered by a doctor.
- Contact your insurance provider and describe your symptoms or situation.
- Your insurance provider should give you the address of a specific health centre that will assist you.
- Be aware that in most cases, you will need to pay for the visit upfront. The cost is usually reimbursed by the health insurance company, but verify your agreement to understand which medical consultations/procedures can be refunded.
By following these steps, you can ensure you get the medical attention you need in an efficient and effective manner.
USEFUL ADDRESSES OF MEDICAL UNITS
Vitaplus, at ul. Lumumby 14, is a health centre, located on the campus.
Hospital "Barlickiego" has an emergency ward: ul. Kopcińskiego 22, Łódź, tel: +48 42 677 66 00 Please note that emergency wards are for emergency situations only. For less serious conditions, or usual treatment of illness, please use regular doctor appointments.
A nonstop emergency medical service center (Pogotowie Ratunkowe) is at 137/141 Sienkiewicza Street (in the neighborhood of Galeria Łódzka). You may use their service in emergency cases, such as injuries, when no other service is available.
