Program IDUB #UniLodz – elastycznie wydatkowane fundusze na badania i rozwój

The fourth edition of the University of Lodz IDUB Excellence Initiative – Research University grant programme, funded by special funds received by the University of Lodz from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, is coming to an end. In this article, we present what the University of Lodz's internal grant competitions implemented from the 2023 budget looked like and take a look at their outcomes. We see a continuous process of evolution of the programme, which is constantly adapted to meet the changing research needs and strategic goals of our university.

One of the key aspects that distinguishes #UniLodz IDUB is its adaptability. The programme does not stand still, it is constantly developing to meet current challenges. The programme managers make their best to meet the expectations of the researchers.

The competitions that have been launched for the past four years at the University of Lodz as part of the IDUB programme have been very popular. They are based on the assumption that they should be adapted to the needs of different target groups, i.e. researchers at different stages of their careers, but also doctoral students. Most of them are addressed in the same form to all disciplines, but there are also special competitions, such as the competition for the translation of a scientific monograph from Polish into a foreign language. 2023 marked the second edition of the Interdisciplinary Research Grants competition and the new competition "Impact of science on society". For the first time, we have also organised the Short-term trips for researchers to partner universities affiliated to the UNIC alliance a competition. We will soon find out how many employees of the University of Lodz have decided to participate in it

– says Prof. dr hab. Rafał Głowacki – Rector's Representative for Excellence Initiative – Research University (IDUB) Competition, University of Lodz

Competition for the translation of a scientific monograph from Polish into a foreign language (congress language) – intended for the field of humanities. The winner was Dr hab. Inga Kuzma, Associate Professor from the Faculty of Philosophy and History of the University of Lodz in discipline of cultural and religious studies. The book selected for translation: Kuźma Inga B., Pietrzak Edyta B., "Kobieta przestrzeń konfliktów pole walk. Szkice z antropologii politycznej", Lodz University Press, Lodz 2021.

Bonuses for grants obtained from external funds 4th edition – the aim of the competition is to honour research teams of the University of Lodz that obtain projects financed from external sources in any discipline of science most efficiently.  By awarding additional bonuses for grants to the teams most actively obtaining financing from external sources, the University of Lodz wants to encourage them to further applications, including those as part of prestigious international competitions. The call is underway.

Short-term trips of researchers to partner universities affiliated to the UNIC Alliance 2023 – the aim of the competition is to support the international mobility of academics from the University of Lodz. As part of the trip, it will be possible to carry out scientific cooperation, including publications and projects, with foreign partners affiliated to the UNIC Alliance. The call is underway.

Bonuses for publications and patents. Awards for publications and patents are granted on a rolling basis. A special fund was created to reward employees of the University of Lodz who conduct research activities and achieve the best results in this area, regardless of the discipline. This is a way to appreciate those from the university community who stand out with their attitude and effectiveness of their actions. PLN 1 164 150 was spent on bonuses for publication and patents.

Unlike in previous years, we did not launch the Doctoral Research Grants competition, which will, however, be renewed this year. As in previous years, in 2023 bonuses were awarded to employees who most effectively obtain funds for research, as well as to authors of the highest-scoring scientific publications. The awarding of appropriate financial awards, also as part of IDUB, was a manifestation of the appreciation of the employees' contribution to the last evaluation of scientific activities. In summary, 2023 was undoubtedly marked by some interesting novelties. These were balanced by competitions with a proven formula, which together provided an interesting 'mixture' in terms of application opportunities

The University of Lodz Excellence Initiative – Research University (#UniLodz IDUB), i.e. internal grant competitions under which the University of Lodz funds the research ideas of its scientists and doctoral students. By supporting them in practicing good science, the university implements its strategy of striving for research excellence in all areas and disciplines. The competitions also serve internationalisation – development and tightening of cooperation between the university and international researchers.  As part of grants addressed to scientists from the outside of the University of Lodz, the team is joined by experienced and young researchers. This favours the fusion of experiences and increasing the university's scientific potential, supports networking and employee mobility.
The grants are financed as part of the subsidy increased by 2% for the universities that in 2019 joined the Excellence Initiative – Research University (IDUB) competition.  The University of Lodz is going to receive additional funding for research until 2026. Internal grant competitions have been implemented since 2020.
