Minister of Science and Higher Education, Dariusz Wieczorek, speaking to the participants in the Polish Science Gala in the Assembly Hall of the Warsaw University of Technology
The honorees (50 individual and 9 team awards were presented) were honoured for their merits in five categories: significant achievements in the field of scientific, teaching, implementation, organisational activities and overall achievements. The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Ministers: Maria Mrówczyńska, Maciej Gdula and Andrzej Szeptycki, as well as Diana Matusik, the General Director. The University of Lodz was represented by the Vice-Rector for Research, Dr hab. Łukasz Korporowicz, Associate Professor.
During the opening of the gala, the Head of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education thanked for the effort put into the development of Polish science and universities. He drew attention to the role of science in the economy and pointed out the need to tighten cooperation between the science and business sectors.
We have great staff, great scientists, great achievements. Let's not be ashamed of it, let's talk about it because we have reasons to be proud. Science is necessary for the Polish economy; it is essential in creating new jobs. Today, Polish companies should include obligations to provide funds for research and development
– said Minister Dariusz Wieczorek.
He assured that the Ministry of Science and Higher Education would continue the dialogue and develop common positions with the scientific community to best meet its expectations.
Today, a new era for Polish science begins. I would like the term of office of this Government to be remembered as the best for the development of Polish science
– he summed up his speech.
The Polish Science Day, established in 2020, is an opportunity to commemorate the achievements of the most outstanding Polish scientists who have entered the history of science by making breakthrough discoveries in various fields. It is also an expression of appreciation for contemporary Polish researchers, as well as an inspiration to undertake scientific projects and strengthen interest in science and its popularisation among society. Polish Science Day is also an opportunity to honour people outstandingly involved in scientific and academic activities with the Awards of the Minister of Science.
The awarded scientists from the University of Lodz
Prof. Dr hab. Maria Bryszewska is the Head of the Department of General Biophysics at the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection of the University of Lodz. She graduated from the then Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry of the University of Lodz, specialising in high energy experimental physics. She defended her doctoral dissertation on changes in biological membranes in the course of diabetes in 1982 and obtained her habilitation degree in 1990. She earned the title of Professor of Biological Sciences in 1996. She has been the Head of the Department of General Biophysics since 1998. Currently, she has been coordinating three research projects in the field of nanotechnology in cooperation with teams from Spain, Latvia, Germany, Slovakia and Belarus.
Dr hab. Jacek Białek, Associate Professor is a teaching and research employee of the Department of Statistical Methods at the Faculty of Economics and Sociology of the University of Lodz. Mathematical analysis and linear algebra, data analysis in the R environment, statistical quality control and official statistics constitute subjects of his teaching activity. Scientifically he deals with the theory and practice of price indexes.
