Scientific cooperation at the University of Lodz is implemented under domestic and international research projects. UL participates in creation of research networks, which has influence on the development of scientific activities undertaken in partnership with other units.
We are among top ten Polish universities that implement the largest number of projects under the Horizon 2020 - The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. Our scientists also successfully use possibilities that are provided by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and other units associated with the Ministry.
We are members of:
- European University Association EUA
- Alliance of Universities for Democracy (AUDEM)
- INTER-University Dubrovnik
- Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF),
- Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP)
- COPERNICUS-CAMPUS University Alliance for Sustainability
We also operate as part of European universities networks:
- Grupo Compostela de Universidades
- European Universities Continuing Education Network (EUCEN)
- Network of Institutes and Schools of Public Administration in Central and Eastern Europe (NISPAcee)
- Scientific Information for Policy Support in Europe (SINAPSE)

PROJECTS CARRIED OUT IN CO-OPERATION
The University of Lodz Department of Asian Studies (Faculty of International and Political Studies) is a partner in the international consortium that carries out a grant from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Framework Programme. The project entitled Competing Regional Integrations in Southeast Asia (CRISEA) was settled in the competition Regional integration in South East Asia and its consequences for Europe.
The Consortium includes 13 institutions in total. Its leader is Ecole Francaise d’Extreme-Orient and the remaining members, apart from the University of Lodz, include European and Asia universities and research institutions such as: Cambridge University, Oslo University, Hamburg University, the Institute of Social and Political Sciences in Portugal, the University of Naples L’Orientale, the University of Chiang Mai (Thailand), Center for Strategic and International Studies (Indonesia), the University of Malaya (Malaysia), the University of Mandalay (Myanmar), Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences. All the institutions participating in the project deal with broadly understood issues of East Asia and Southeast Asia.
The consortium obtained EUR 2.5 million (including EUR 120 thousand for the University of Lodz) for the implementation of the project. Research works within the project will take 36 months.
The basic research problem that will be undertaken in the project is to find an answer to the question: how is Southeast Asia to transform into a strategic region for the European Union? What are the threats, problems and opportunities resulting from the cooperation with this dynamically developing area?
More information can be found on the CRISEA website.

Communication role on perception and beliefs of EU Citizens about Science (CONCISE) is a project funded by the EU funds (H2020 – SwafS, nr 824537). It brings together partners from five countries: Spain, Italy, Portugal, Poland and Slovakia.
The objective of the project is to deliver qualitative knowledge obtained as part of citizen consultations pertaining to means/channels of the media thanks to which the EU citizens get knowledge related to science and how this knowledge influences their beliefs, opinions and perceptions

The project focuses on the issue which is extremely important for the EU internal security. So far there have been no specific actions aiming at elaboration of methods for counteracting and reacting to terrorist threats that can potentially occur in shopping malls.
Mall-CBRN is an international project, the aim of which is to analyse CBRNe threats in shopping malls, to identify the most probable scenarios of attacks by the use of CBRNE agents and to prepare a set of recommendations as well as to carry out a series of adjusted trainings for employees (security and senior personnel). Additionally, the project focuses on the food security within the supply and distribution chain.
The project is funded by the EU under Internal Security Fund – POLICE

HoloZcan is a new project funded with Horizon 2020 EU Research and Innovation Program, in which University of Lodz is involved. HoloZcan is an European project that aims to bring a new tool for security actors (police, relief workers, disaster managers, crisis managers, stakeholders responsible for public safety, critical infrastructure and service providers), notably in the fields of autonomous detection and response capabilities.
The project will increase bio-aerosol sensing and measurement capability of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) practitioners by developing a high resolution, large throughput, automatic and highly portable detection system for making automatic classification of pathogens and particles.
HoloZcan develops a novel holographic microscopy and imaging technology for rapid and cost-efficient screening of potential biological threats and unknown, potentially dangerous substances, combined with methods of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The project responds to the current needs of European CBRN practitioners and to the technological gaps identified by the ENCIRCLE project, and addresses several shortcomings of the current approaches to bio-threat agent detection.
