UCC is also a university with a strong commitment to inclusivity. More than 23% of its students are people with disabilities or representing a wide range of minorities – religious, sexual and national ones. University College Cork was one of the first Irish institutions to offer higher education to women (1885) and to begin conferring the title of professor to women (1910). Equal treatment is now provided there by the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Unit, and the university itself has the status of 'University of Sanctuary', i.e. a university providing sanctuary to those in need.
