In her article the researcher is wondering which value should be maximized, i.e. which good increases our well-being. Being a hedonist, she answers it is pleasure. In the course of her argument, she also tries to show superiority of monistic theories of values over the pluralist ones.
- The monistic theory orders values. One is the most important value and the rest are subordinate to it, i.e. they are values but they need to contribute to the superior value. This is a simple theory which can indicate to us in a simple way which direction to follow. If the superior value for us is freedom, then all the remaining values are in agreement with it and serve it. The pluralist theory supporters indicate a number of superior, equally important values. Such an attitude does not help in a situation when we need to decide what to do next. Should we care for knowledge, happinness, honour or truth? - explains the philosopher.
