Psia kość! Every year in November, students and employees all over the campus of the University of Lodz throw donations into marked boxes located at faculties, dormitories, and at the University of Lodz Library. Children from the University of Lodz Kindergarten and students from the Righteous Among the Nations State Secondary School of the University of Lodz and the British International School of the University of Lodz also join the collection. Thanks to this, further deliveries of basic necessities reach the Animal Shelter in Lodz on Marmurowa Street. In total, we have already donated over 7 tonnes of pet food, which is a huge support for the animals.
Albert Kurkowski, Acting Director of the Animal Shelter in Lodz, spoke about the campaign and the support needed during the University of Lodz press breakfast, which he attended with his dog Bodzio:
I come from a place where there is the most love per square metre in this city. I am very happy that we have fewer and fewer dogs and cats there. As of today, we have 181 dogs and 49 cats. Bodzio, who is with us, has already had two introduction sessions with his new owners and on Sunday he will go to his own bed, under his own blanket and with his people. We would like to provide the animals with the best possible conditions. The university campaign Psia Kość helps us a lot. The University of Lodz has been supporting us fantastically for 13 years by collecting food (...) and this cooperation is brilliant, and most importantly it helps our animals.
Together, we can do a lot of good
The animal shelter needs our help all year round. How else can we support the animals besides donating pet food and accessories? The best gift is a responsible home. You can also donate or become a volunteer.
We always need pet food – good quality pet food. We also have sick animals that require specialist food. With the current number of animals, we need 150 to 200 kg daily. Blankets and towels are also useful. We don't need duvets or pillows, because the dogs chew them and can eat the filling
– explains Albert Kurkowski and adds:
All these cats and dogs, these are our animals from Lodz. We are all responsible for them. We would like all of them to find new homes, because the best shelter is an empty shelter. Volunteering also helps us with this. At the moment we have 45 active volunteers. The dogs go for walks, play, socialise. We encourage you to join us. We need more volunteers who would like to spend time with us in the company of animals and people who love them.
We would like to thank all donors for their generosity and support. Thanks to you, animals from the shelter in Lodz have better living conditions and a greater chance of finding new, loving homes. See you next year during Psia kość! – our university campaign!
