Lachowski i Piątkowski z WPiA UŁ o wyborach na Białorusi

This coming Sunday, 26 January 2025, Belarus will hold another presidential election, which is already being called an "election without a choice." Two scientists from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Lodz: Dr Mateusz Piątkowski (Department of Public International Law and International Relations) and Dr Tomasz Lachowski (Department of Public International Law and International Relations, University of Lodz), Editor-in-Chief of the Obserwator Międzynarodowy portal discuss the elections in their podcast.

This will be another Belarusian election, the winner of which is known before the vote. The creators of the podcast "Lachowski i Piątkowski o prawie międzynarodowym" [Lachowski and Piątkowski on International Law] invited Dr Anton Saifullayeu, lecturer at the Centre for East European Studies at the University of Warsaw, Editor-in-Chief of an expert portal, to talk about the characteristics of the Alexander Lukashenko's regime.

What did Lukashenka's unique phenomenon that allowed him to win elections for the past three decades consist in? What did 2020 change in this regard? What is characteristic of the peculiar relationship between Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Vladimir Putin and can we say that today Belarus is in fact a satellite state of the Russian Federation? What benefits does Lukashenko's regime derive from the migration crisis triggered in 2021 on the border with Poland and Lithuania? What is the pattern of repression and the situation of political prisoners in Belarus? Will Lukashenko ever be held criminally responsible for his actions, especially considering Lithuania's recent application to the International Criminal Court in The Hague indicating crimes against humanity committed by the Belarusian regime after 2020? Finally, what about the Belarusian political emigration led by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya?

You will find answers to these and other questions in the eighth episode of the third season of the podcast "Lachowski i Piątkowski o prawie międzynarodowym".

We encourage you to listen to the full episode!
