Dzień Internetu – prof. Piotr Sitarski o początkach sieci w Polsce

International Internet Day is observed every year on 29 October. Its objective is to promote conscious use of Internet and educate users about online safety.

In today's world, the Internet has become an inseparable part of our lives – we use it for work, study, communication and entertainment. And what were the beginnings of the Internet in Poland like? We asked Professor Piotr Sitarski from the Department of Film and Audio-Visual Media, who was one of the first thousand internet users in our country.

Most of my older colleagues initially considered it eccentric, perhaps unnecessary. Today, the term "internet user" means nothing, because almost everyone is one. However, at that time, people using the Internet in Poland constituted a rather narrow group, perhaps a few or a dozen thousand people. I myself used a very interesting protocol at that time, which is also a symbol of the early Internet, i.e. the Usenet protocol. These were discussion forums, thematic, international, Polish ones, devoted to very different topics, from general issues, through hobbyists, to scientific ones

– recalls Prof. Piotr Sitarski.

The entire conversation with the scientist from the Department of Film and Audio-Visual Media at the University of Lodz is published below. In the material (in Polish), our interviewee also mentions, among other things, the gradual entry of universities into the Internet space, the difficulties that were associated with this process, and also shares his predictions about how the Internet will be used in the future.
