PROFIL PRACOWNIKA: Artur Gałkowski

Artur Gałkowski is an associate professor at the University of Łódź (Faculty of Philology, Institute of Romance Studies), where he teaches general linguistics, Italian linguistics, Italian as L2, translation theory and practice, specialised terminology. His main research areas include linguistics, onomastics (chrematonomastics), language contact, multilingualism, terminology, lexicology, translation studies, and glottodidactics. He has published extensively in these fields and has participated in numerous national conferences and international research projects.

1991-1996 - studied Romance philology + Italian specialisation; M.A.'s thesis entitled Studio fenomenologico dell'imprestito: prospettiva linguistico-storica degli influssi mutuali fra la lingua francese e quella italiana (under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Vyacheslav Novikov)

2002 - obtaining a doctoral degree PhD on the basis of the thesis entitled Connettivi argomentativi e segnali discorsivi nella realtà testuale della comunicazione pastorale (under the supervision of Prof. Dr. hab. Mieczysław Gajos)
2010 - obtaining the degree of Doctor of Letters Habilitated Litt.D. in the discipline of linguistics - specialisation in Romance linguistics (Italian and French) - on the basis of the dissertation entitled Chrematonimy w funkcji kulturowo-użytkowej.  Onomastyczne studium porównawcze na materiałe polskim, włoskim, francuskim  [Chrematonyms in the cultural-utilitarian function. A comparative onomastic study on Polish, Italian, French material], WUŁ 2008 (I ed.), 2011 (II ed.).

Since 2020 – member of an international research team within the VEGA grant project no. 1/0158/20, funded by the Slovak Grant Agency (Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic), entitled “Theory and Terminological System of Slovak Onomastics (in the Context of Slavic and International Onomastic Terminology)”. The project is conducted at the Ľudovít Štúr Institute of Linguistics, Slovak Academy of Sciences (Bratislava). Outcomes include a dataset integrated into the Slovak Terminology Portal and the publication of a collective terminological monograph (Slovenská onomastická terminológia, VEDA, Trnava–Bratislava, 2024).

Since 2025, the project continues under the new title “Slovak Onomastic Terminology in an International Context and Comparison” (VEGA no. 1/0360/25).

Research interests: Italian, French, and Slavic linguistics; onomastics / chrematonomastics; branding; terminology; specialized languages; teaching Italian as a foreign language; text linguistics; translation studies.
